So what exactly do we do?

STORY TELLING FOR CHILDREN:

A typical session for schools or in a library is one hour long. The programme will depend on the age range of the audience and the size of the audience.(this can vary from as few as 10 to as many as 3000!).

All sessions will include:

  • Fairytales played in pantomime tradition with Peter playing guitar and Mary telling the story with the help of up to 20 children in costume.
  • Songs
  • Folk Tales
  • Nursery Rhymes
  • Original Tales

The sessions are always inclusive, interactive, fun, challenging and aim to make kids feel good. Self esteem is the key to all!

WORKSHOP FOR LIBRARIANS, PRIMARY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHERS

TELLING STORIES TO CHILDREN AND LIVING TO TELL THE TALE!

17 years of professional storytelling has taught me two things; children LOVE stories, especially when they or someone they know is involved and, secondly… always expect the unexpected!

This workshop is practical, hands-on and interactive.

It aims to:
· Pass on tried and true tricks of the trade…how to get the book down and TELL the story

· How to create voices for your characters.

· How to use your body, voice, pauses etc to create a mood for your stories.

· How to put boundaries around the telling that allows for creativity not mayhem!

· How to include the children

· How to get out of sticky situations, leaving self-esteem firmly intact! (e.g. you’ve asked for one person to come up to be the princess and two excitedly race to the front or the princess you have chosen suddenly gets major stage fright or you have a real little rascal trying to sabotage the whole performance)

· Recognizing the magic moments when it’s time to veer off on a child lead tangent.

· Leave the participants with a handful of failsafe stories they can go back to base with. (handout provided)

· The use of props, costumes, puppets and music.

Telling stories to children is the best fun. It is the best fun because in any one moment you can have your mouth open with the wonder of an extraordinary performance or the joy of seeing a very shy child feeling safe enough to participate.
Telling stories provides a platform for children to learn empathy, thoughtfulness, manners. They learn about justice and that sometimes things aren’t fair.

Telling stories provides a platform for imaginative play, for the beginning of creative writing, for wild (and yet controlled!) laughter.
As a teacher or as a trusted adult, having creative and safe fun together enhances your relationships with the children. Our relationships are the pathway on which education travels. Our relationships are also vital in the formation of safety nets for children who need them.

Let’s play! Tell a child a story. You cannot fail!

Never too old!
